ENTREVISTA HALCOMBE NORILSK (ALBERTO GONZALO TORRELLAS)

No obstante, incluí un artículo sobre la comunidad sorda en mi libro The Adventures of Halcombe Norilsk and other Gripping Tales.

En mi libro The Adventures of Halcombe Norilsk and other Gripping Tales cuento las aventuras de este personaje.

PEC: The Comic Vision of Susanna Moodie

Inasmuch as one has deeply read the texts selected from Susanna Moodie´s piece of literature: “Roughing it in the bush”, I am in the position to talk with regards to the comic vision of this author as you are about to discover.

Let´s start with “A visit to Grosse Isle”. I do not deem this story a comic one insofar as I truly believe the text does want to impress the reader: “What sublime views of the north side of the river those habitants of St. Thomas must enjoy”, “It was a scene unlike any I had ever beheld and to which Britain contains no parallel”, “I was not less struck with its low fertile shores”, “My daydreams were dispelled by the return of the boat”.

Notwithstanding this feeling, it is clear that the end of this story has a comic element. As a matter of fact, this is when the wife of the old Scotch dragoon interrupts the captain: “She whispered something confidentially in his ear. “Oh, ho, the brandy” he responded aloud”. This is comic as it is the final element of the story as they are going to have a good dinner: “The bread, the butter, the beef, the onions, and potatoes are here”.

Overall, I do not find the text fully comic, yet it has some comic at the end.

The comic vision of Susanna Moodie
The comic vision of Susanna Moodie

Abide by sentences such as: “With his jolly red face, twinkling black eyes, and rubicund nose” or “he will know how to value the whiskey bottle”, we discover the comic in the story: “Uncle Joe and his family”. Furthermore, the author even point out the comic in Canada: “I should not be surprised to meet with Judas Iscariot, Pilate, and Herod. And then the female appellations”.

This is thereby a comic story. Given how the story develops with uncle Joe and his family refusing to leave the house, this story can epitomize the comic of writer Susanna Moodie. Just see some of the conversations full of wit: “the longer you remain in Canada the less you will like it”, “you Britishers are not made of flesh and blood”.

Is “Brian, the still-hunter” a comic story?? To say the truth, it has some moments overlaid with comical elements. You can sense it with the description the author does of the main protagonist, Brian, that ends up with: “In short, a perfect reprobate”. Likewise, when the soldier Layton talks about Brian, you can feel the comic too: “He loved his pipe and his pot too well”. The end is comic too, albeit we should not be happy with the death of the dog, the way it perishes is comic.

Yet, it is even more comic some of the sentences uttered by Brian, the protagonist, “I need not mention the manner in which I transgressed God´s holy laws”. Indeed, this story is utterly comic.

All in all, this is what I have felt as far as comic is concerned after reading the texts penned by Susanna Moodie.

"Heart of Darkness" Joseph Conrad

The Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe has claimed that Heart of Darkness is an "offensive and deplorable book" saying that Conrad does not provide enough of an outside frame of reference to enable the book to be read as an ironic or critical statement against imperialism. Write an essay for or against Achebe's assertion based on the evidence of Conrad’s literary text. Make sure you do use quotes from Heart of Darkness to support your argument.

Not only the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe claimed “Heart of Darkness” is an “offensive and deplorable book” he also deemed Joseph Conrad as “bloody racist”, remarks against which I am about to defend as you might discover.

On no account can I understand how this novella is such a classic book. Notwithstanding all its fame, I utterly believe it does help the idea of colonialism regardless, with words that describe Africans as it follows: “a whirl of black limbs”, “the prehistoric man was cursing us”, “unhappy savages”, “footsore sulky niggers”, “the savagery, the utter savagery”, “the messenger, a lone negro”, “Exterminate all the brutes”, “What a row the brute makes”. In accordance with such harsh statements, we have the notion imperialism is right insofar as we perceive Africans to be primitive.

Likewise, when this story begins, it looks as if Europeans were embracing a romantic enterprise: “The dreams of men, the seed of commonwealth, the germs of empires”. However, we know imperialism brought far too much suffering.

Furthermore, when the story is finishing hence one suspects a development this is what is told of Kurtz: “The wilderness had patted him on the head, and behold, it was like a ball”. Indeed, what we perceive is not an attack on colonialism, yet a grim picture of Africa by contrast.

In my humble opinion, if this book was really critical of colonialism the same language would be used to talk about Europeans, nevertheless, this does not take place at all.

EUROVISION 2021: Italia (Maneskin) Wins with a Rock Song!!!

It was what Europe needed after a harsh year of a coronavirus pandemic (which is not over as yet regardless) that the winner of Eurovision 2021 were a rock band like the Italians Maneskin and their performance were as outstanding as their song Zitti e Buoni (it could be translated as: Shut up and everything is ok)

Italy Eurovision
                                                                Italia Wins Eurovision

Spain pays somewhere in the region of 600 thousand euros to participate in Eurovisión and alongside Britain, Germany, France and Italy our country goes directly to the final of the contest.

The result of Spain was certainly a pity, yet the result of Great Britain was far much more embarrassing because they ended up in the last position with zero points despite this country is very relevant as far as pop music is concerned for instance. What is more, the British singer is the brother of Sam Smith, a famous music star. British media assures European countries do hate Britain now because of Brexit.

I do not really think the song from Great Britain was so awful but what I really believe Italy deserved to win with such an incredible rock song. The performance of the Italian band Maneskin is truly spectacular as you might discover right now.

ITALIA "ZITTI E BUONI" EUROVISION

As you may have realized the performance of Maneskin is absolutely outstanding with a superb line up where we can highlight the singer and bassist who are so fabulous they render a remarkable live act but it was even exciting to see their comeback insofar as everything was so competitive other countries such as France or even other ones could have won as you can discover seeing this video that resembles the exciting end of the contest.

Novak Djokovic Roland Garros 2021

The assumption belief we have been hearing for the last 15 years which makes us believe Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are undoubtedly the best two players in tennis history is more and more and more and more difficult to defend as Novak Djokovic is on the verge of becoming the best ever.

READ THIS IN SPANISH Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic Roland Garros

NOVAK DJOKOVIC ROLAND GARROS

Indeed, Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal the other day in his most beloved place: clay in Paris. Despite losing 5-0 in the first set (a set which was won by Nadal in fact) and being losing 2-0 in the last one Novak Djokovic ended up defeating the king of Roland Garros, Nadal, in four sets.

You can watch the best highlights now. This is only the third defeat of Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros since he started playing in Paris almost 20 years ago. In fact, only Djokovic has defeated Nadal in Paris two times and it is also the first time someone makes 8 breaks against Nadal on clay and wins the match as well.

ROLAND GARROS 2021 NOVAK DJOKOVIC VS RAFAEL NADAL

But there are more notwithstanding, last Sunday the final was played and Novak Djokovic was the favourite. Yet, the Greek player Tsitsipas is the fittest player of 2021 and he proved this extent by winning the two first sets.

Incredibly, Novak Djokovic overcame this awful situation and attaining a super comeback he won the game, his second Roland Garros to date, and his 19th Grand Slam title overall in a total of 29 finals.

An impressive milestone. What is more, he could have more Grand Slam titles nowadays as he lost strange finals as the two he lost against Wawrinka for instance and last year he was disqualified from the US open because he hit unintentionally a referee with a tennis ball when he was the clear candidate to win the last edition of US Open.

Roger Feder and Rafael Nadal should be scared because, what is more, Novak Djokovic is younger than them.
